Geometry Wizards

At our assembly last week we shared some fantastic tutorial powerpoints that we had made about geometry.

Art

This term we are working towards an art exhibition. Currently we are looking at the French artist Henri Rousseau, and basing our own artworks on his jungle paintings. Below is one process we have used. Next week we will use a different medium to create artworks with a very New Zealand flavour, but still based on Rousseau's works.

Using the laptop to see Rousseau's jungle paintings, we "zoomed in" and did a sketch.

"Zooming in" even more, we created a chalk and pastel picture using our own colour palettes.....

We covered it with Indian ink and then washed it off again. The ink soaked into the chalk lines between the pastel, giving a lovely black background, and an interesting texture over the whole picture.

New Furniture

Today we were able to try out a new table which we may be buying as part of the refurbishment later in the year. What a novelty! These children are flat out doing maths problems this morning, and school hasn't even started yet!

The NUKES

Yesterday the Nukes came to play a concert at our school - what a wonderful show! The kids were spellbound and totally involved. Some of the class were involved in a workshop with the band too, and we learned some new chords and played one of the songs in the concert with the Nukes. Lucky!!
The Nukes are going to be at the Cabana tomorrow night (Friday) to launch their new album.
You will see in the photo that "Country Boy Ben" plays a tenor ukulele, Dave Parker plays a ukulele with a bass string on it, and Snapper plays a banjolele. Very cool! Everyone got their ukuleles autographed after the concert.

School Disco

Yesterday  we had a school disco. It was organised by a committee of some of the kids who went on the Leadership Conference last month.
They raised money for sports equipment, and everyone had lots of fun. Here are some photos....

Science experiment. by Piper

Magic water

Firstly   Mrs McLean got two clean stramboli jars the same size.
She filled one up with cold water, and the other jar with hot water.

Secondly   she put two drops of orange dye in the hot water so the two will look different.
Next she put a piece of cardboard on top of the cold water.
Then she tipped the jar over and put it on top of the other jar
so the hot water is on the bottom and the cold on the top.

Penultimately  the hot water started to swap places with the cold water
so they were now the same colour as the hot.

Finally  the hot water and the cold had mixed.
This experiment shows us that the hot water molecules mix much better than cold water molecules.
also the hot water rises because hot water is lighter than cold water.
By Piper

Hot and Cold water

We filled two test tubes with water - one with cold and one with hot.
We added dye to them both and this is what we noticed:
In the cold water the dye stayed together and gradually dropped to the bottom, as you can see on the right.
In the hot water the dye mixed through quickly and evenly without being stirred.
This was because the particles in the hot water were moving around by themselves, but the cold water didn't move around.

Science-A lot of air. Michelle Arama

Room 13 is learning about science and here is one of the experiments that we did:
Get a balloon and an empty narrow-necked soda bottle and a container or pot, and put boiling water in it right out of the jug.
Stretch the balloon over the neck of the bottle so there is no holes or gaps between the bottle and balloon, then place the bottle in the pot or container of hot water.
Then suddenly you will see that the balloon begins to inflate. This is because the hot air expanded and took over the cold air because hot air takes up more space than cold air. The hot air rises because hot is less dense than cold, and cold is heavier than hot.
And this experiment is seen in the world because of hot air baloons. They have fire to heat it and make it go up.

Current Study.....

WOW! Science!
Watch this space for reports of our science experiments. Lots of wondrous and amazing discoveries about our world, have been taking place in room 13 in the last couple of weeks.

Conferences

This coming week (June 23-25) we have 3-way conferences. This is a great time for your child to show you some work and share his/her successes with you. We can review goals set earlier in the year, and reset goals for the next few months. I hope all parents are able to come along.

The last day of camp by Kyra.

On the last day on Year 5 camp it was hard to get ready to go back hame. We had to clean the toilets and the P.E stuff. After we did that we went to the river hole. It took like 2 hours and we were there. We were all hot. Some people were jumping off the bench. So we stayed there for 1 hour and we had to go. When we got back the bus arrived. Everyone was sad and miserable.

At camp Wareham by Tyler

When we went to camp I thought this was going to be fun but it wasn't.
When we first arrived we had to grab our bags and put them beside the fence and ran up the hill. When we had climbed up the hill we sat on the seats and we had numbers. My number was 13.
Next it was time to see where we were going to sleep. I went in the tent.
Then we went to the river.  Burrrrrrrrrr it was cold! Mrs Henare said that the big stick looks like a alligator  and we all went on it.
"Who wants to go on the tubes?!"
" Me me!" everybody said. I was last.
Tthen we all went back to camp and had free time. I climbed the hill in the patch and when I completed it I called it ROCK CLIMBING. Then we went to the rock pools and sand dunes. It felt like it lasted forever climbing up the sand dunes but it lasted for 2 minutes. I ran down the hill then we went back to camp. "Mmmmm, stew!" I said. I ate all of it up,  then pudding. Apple crumble and ice cream and I had three bowls of it!

What I thought of Year 5 camp, by Caitlin.

When I went to camp Wareham I thought it was going to be disgusting. I will show you what I mean. I thought that the toilets were going to be long drop and I hate long drops and the walks were going to be so long, but luckily that did not happen.
On the first day we went for a short as walk and when we got there  my legs were normal. I did not feel any pain because it was right across the road. The next walk was to the beach and that took an hour and when we got there I could not take another step. On the way back Mrs Henare gave as all a biscuit, but this time it was even more tiring then it was on the way there.
Anahera, Angelina and I were the last ones back to the camp site. When we got back we went in our cabins to rest our legs. After we had a played we had dinner. We had stew with mashed potato and I was the first one to finish and heres the funny bit - I had 3 plates and I also had 1 bowl of apple crumble with vanilla ice cream.
After that I was full. I could not eat anymore. When it was dark we went eeling. We all went into two groups. The group I was in saw 2 eels but we only caught one. When we got back we had supper -  milo and cookies. The people in my cabin played cards. We played a game of snap and fishy fishy. Then we had to go to bed and everybody had a great day.

Optimist Yachting by Michelle.

Salt water all over my body flows all around me, drips coldly tears of the ocean into the yacht.

The boom swings from side to side, almost hitting us in the face. Seagulls bossy and loud.

The awful, yuck fish smell combined with sweet, aroma air catch my nose.

Tangy salt water goes down my throat for no reason.

Getting closer to shore now and we are the last ones coming in.

Optimist yachting by Piper

On Monday 10th year 6's went optimist yachting.
The water was very cold.Michelle and I nearly capsized. It wasn't that windy that day
so it was hard to sail.

YACHTING by Summer

I sit on the side of the boat, very excited as can be, as the wind is blowing in my hair, and I can smell a very salty smell coming from the ocean.

As we go out into the ocean, I feel the boat going really fast and the water constantly goes into my shoes.

OPTIMIST YACHTING for Year 6

We are still keen to hear from anyone who can help with transport or supervision in the afternoons down at Pandora Pond this week.  Unfortunately we won't be able to take all the year 6s each day, as we had hoped, because we still don't have enough parent helpers or transport. So we will be rostering the students instead. But it is important that they bring their GEAR EVERY DAY, even if they are not on the roster for that day, just in case we are surprised with extra transporters or supervising parents.
GEAR LIST: Sunhat, sunscreen, sweatshirt, togs and towel. Old smeakers (for wearing in the water), an old woollen jersey or polyprop (next to the skin, to keep warm when wet) or a wetsuit if you have one. A bag to put things in.
We will be leaving school at 12 o'clock each day, if you are coming to help.
It should be a great week!

Inquiry

Last week we learned about the Hawkes Bay earthquake, and we did role-plays and interviewed each other about our "earthquake experiences".
This week we are looking at the rebuilding of Napier after the earthquake, so we are learning about ART DECO.
Today we made comparisons between Art deco cars and clothes, and those of today.
Here are the first ideas from some groups below. What other differences can you think of?
