Earthquake

I can see just a little bit of light the size of a cheese. Rock crushing rocks and metal. My nerves are shutting down.
I can't feel any part of my leg and arm.The pain in them feels like a lion or shark is ripping off my legs and a croc is eating my arm.
I see less light when the rocks cover up the hole I see through.
Rocks are crushing my back like a stampede of rhinos. Then the rocks get lighter and lighter. They had to cut off my legs and arms. It felt like a chainsaw was cutting it off. I had a million pains in my leg and arms.
I had to have some medicine to make them go away. Aftershocks are making more destruction. I can see out of my window aftershocks about 4.7 making rocks crush the cars.
Outside I can hear the sound of a tank firing a missile to the city.
Now I'm in a wheelchair.
I can still feel my arms and legs for now when they cut it off.
I won't feel any more pain in my arm and leg.
Now the aftershocks have stopped.
I have a metal leg and arm.
But I still feel the pain.

Softball

On Friday Porritt played for Hops Shield. There was a girls team and a boys team. The boys and girls actually faced the same teams so if we faced Onekawa the boys will be facing Onekawa and they were a good team. Then we faced Saint Pats girls. The girls won against them. They were pretty good and the boys lost against them. They must have a good boys!
Then we faced the best team of all which was Henry Hill. They won all of their games. Not only won all of their games, they even won the shield. They are so good that even they won against Onekawa, and Onekawa was so good but not better than Henry Hill.

Possums by Mora

There's a war of words going around about possums. Many New Zealanders want them to stay but others want them to go. They may be cute but they kill our native bush. Personally I believe they should leave our country.

Possums are killing and eating our native birds. They are climbng up our native trees and killing the birds inside. They are also killing our native plants. Plus they are scratching our native trees.

Possums skin is really handy for hunters. When hunters catch a possum they can sell their skin and get money for it. With the money they get they can use it to buy food for their family too. We can kill possums to keep ourselves warm in winter-times with their fur.

We don't really need possums. They just kill our native plants and they eat lots of birds and that can make them extinct.

My Dance Recital

I'm in a dance group called Heather Brunsdon School Of Dance. We have a Recital coming up. I have some pamphlets to give out. It's on the 19th of November and there's 2 shows. Ones at 2.00pm and the other one is at 6.oopm that night. The tickets cost $17.00 for the adults and the children cost $12.00. My dance teacher said it's a really good show that you don't want to miss. It's at the Municipal theatre in town down Tennyson Street. I hope some people can make it

King of the cloud forests

This is what our teacher has been reading to us. I am telling some of the story here.
Ashley's father came to China and became a priest trying to tell China to believe in God. Then the war started and Ashley's friend Lin went to try and bust down the planes. After the bombing from the planes Ashley's Father thought it was too deadly and Ashley would die. So Ashley's Uncle Sung took him to the Himalayas then Uncle Sung got lost. Then yeti's found Ashley and made him their king.

Flight

Our topic is about flight and we thought of questions like how do planes fly? Who made the first plane? Also what planes are famous?
We found out that flight has to be balanced between thrust, drag, lift and weight. We have also made autogyros but some we made were floppy fast or very slow.

Possums are Pests!

There's a war of words about possums. Many New Zealanders believe possums are harmless, but others don't. I personally think possums possums should be eradicated as they harm our environment. But it's not only me who thinks this. There's the department of conservation (DOC) and other environmental agencies.
Possums harm our environment by eating lots from the forest floors. When they eat lots from the forest floors, they don't only harm the forest floors, but also affect the birds in a way called starvation as birds also eat some from the forest floors.
Possums alo harm our native birds in another way by eating their eggs. When possums do this this the native birds could become extinct. They also harm the native birds by destroying their habitat, which causes birds to move to another place which might not be a convenient place.
Possums are breeding a little too much, and they're breeding by eating our native plants which belong to the native birds, or breeding by eating the birds' eggs. It's like the more possums the less native species.
There's no actual need for possums to stay in New Zealand, but they're still here. So either we do somthing about possums or we lose our native species. I don't want them, but what about you?

Athletics

Yesterday we did practising for athletics. I said to the teacher I'm turning ten soon and Mr Hemi said that I'm lucky to be in the nine year old group because they aren't as fast as the ten year old group so I'm very lucky that I'm not ten yet. The nine year old group did a run. On the first run I came 3rd or 4th and on the 2nd run I came 2nd. I made it in to athletics. YaY!!!!. I'm so excited to go to athletics but I just don't want it to be as hot as last time.

Music

With our new interactive board and our new speakers we have been listening to music like Flight of the Bumblebee, Vocapeople and much more music every day from YouTube.

My favourite clip is Vocapeople. Why? Well this clip has no special effects or instruments. It is all made with people's voices, and there are some great snippets of music on it. You should look it up on Youtube.

Possums are pests!

There is a great big fight about keeping possums and not keeping possums. The people who are involved are all the environment agencies. But I think we should get rid of possums instantly.

Possums are eating all the native birds' eggs. Possums are pests because they eat all the native birds eggs from the native bird so they can't breed and hatch into more native birds.

Possums eat trees.Possums are a really big hazard for the native bush. They can eat a bit off a tree and it might fall down and destroy a native birds nest.

Possums are eating all the native animals' food. For example berries, leaves and all that other food and that's how birds starve to death. Native birds don't have enough food to eat every single day.

As I said possums should be wiped out instantly if we want our native animals to survive.

The rock

The small mouth is wide open. In the small beady eye is a shell. At the top of the head it has one hole and a bump. At the back it has two holes. When you put your finger at its head it looks like a long-necked dinosaur.

Rep trials

Push bump smash! My heart starts pumping when I run as fast as a cheetah. Its off to the backs. The backs dart through the weak defence. TRY! We score! There goes the final whistle that makes me relax.
Sitting there wondering if I'm going to get picked for the awesome team to represent Napier, I hear the names being called. My nerves grow bigger and bigger.
"Chase Solomon," he calls.
My heart just starts to glow in amazement, then fills with joy. I then shake my coaches hand and thank him.

WIND

It glides through the city
tackling everything that gets in its way.
Fighting trees managing to survive.
It whistles on top of the roofs.
When it glides through the air
its like a leopard pouncing on its prey.

WIND

Wind creeps through my hair.
His temperature grows cold every brilliant minute.
He's a monster to the children.
He's a thief for the business people.
He's a threat too for the nature.
So beware, you'll never know when the wind might turn his cold eyes on you.

Camp Kaitawa: We're back!

The Year 6s are back to school from a fabulous week at the epic Camp Kaitawa (still exhausted). Camp was so cool because of the beautiful views from Lou's Lookout and our tiring walk up Nga Moko.(Eight hours it took!!}We also saw a great sight of two water-falls cascading into a clear stream. The water sent chills rushing down our spines.
Luckily we had parents to help us. They were very kind to us and fun too, but our bus driver Cedric played tricks on us! He camouflaged himself into the bush and jumped in the front of some of us when we were walking down the Lou's Lookout track. He kept surprising us with his camera when we weren't expecting it! But other than that he was really fun, and an amazing wizard in the kitchen too.
In the dark spooky caves that we visited on Thursday we saw giant wetas about the size of your hand!(Did you know they are the heaviest insects?) On Friday was the worst day coming back, because we didn't want to come back, but we stopped in Wairoa to have fish and chips for lunch, which was delicious. When we saw our parents and families we were happy and glad to be back.

Inquiry week 5

On a fabulous day rooms 13 and 15 went to the awesome Boundary stream. Our guides, Pete and Mark, were from DOC, which is short for department of conservation. They showed us the traps that they set to catch worth-less pests. They are all designed to kill.
So then we set off on a bush walk to hear native birds. About five minutes into the walk we saw and heard a Kereru- a wood pigeon! He looked beautiful. Then we came to the pepperwood plant which is as spicy as chili and onions.
"WOW"I whispered to myself,"This tree is as big as any thing I've ever seen! It was over 800 years old and still going!!!
"Look what I found"someone annouced.A dead stoat.Everyone crowded it then we had to move on.Then we came across a weta house with the cave weta in it and did you know that they are native to our amazing country.

TERM 2 INQUIRY: Pest or Pests

Room 13 has been learning about pests and pets. We watched a DVD called Invaders in Paradise. New Zealand was a lovely land full of birds. The birds had no predators. There were no mammals except bats.
When the "invaders" came the forest became quiet. The first "invader" in paradise was the kiore, which was the Polynesian rat. When the European people came they brought another "invader" which was the black ship rat. We learned about what these rat pests did to native birds, and that was why the forest became quiet.
The human invaders burnt down the trees and about one third of the trees were burnt. The invaders ate the moa, the bird that was nearly the same hight as two people.

Here is a picture of Maddi's desk-tidy. She decorated it with straws, and had a lid on a hinge. There were lots of others that worked out well too.
Some people had to make lots of modifications to their original plans. Ethan had one that had room to put PPA's as well, but he still had some work to do on the base of it. And Shae designed one with cotton-wool padding round the top so it was warm and quiet. Some people designed them to fit on the inside of their desk-lids.

Technology

For the last two weeks of term we have been doing technology. The problem we had to solve was that some people were too slow to find their pens, pencil, rubbers and rulers. So we had to design and create different type of pencil cases that will hold our rulers pens pencils and rubbers.
We had some criteria that we set, and they included to make our pencil case durable and stable, and it had to fit on our desks. We had to think of a solution, then we planned and drew it, then we made a proto-type out of paper. Then we had to assess the proto-type, and decide whether we needed to modify it, or make any changes, before we started making the real ones.
It didn't take long to build our pencil cases. Lots of people re-used cans and packets, and some people made a net from card and constructed it that way. Some people decorated them. Today we shared them all and decided which ones met the criteria. We all voted for Maddi's because it looked good as well as being a good construction. Here is a picture of one of the prototypes.

At Year Five Camp

At year five camp the girls slept in the cabin first and the boys slept in the tents first. If some boys did not want to sleep in a tent there was a boy cabin where they could sleep. We went out to the beach and cooked some tea with potatoes and sausages and some cheese sauce on top of it. After that we got more than three marshmallows to cook on the fire. Then we had damper with some golden syrup in the middle of it and it was yummy. Then when it was late we went eeling with meat on some string. We went to bed at nine o'clock. There were bunk beds and in my room were Ally, Amber, Jasmine, Courtney and me - Jorja. We went to the river and swam. It was so fun at camp.

Monday Yachting

Monday morning- it's a great day to go yachting.I'm feeling a little bit scared and nervous. We were having a bit of trouble with transport, but we had just enough to go. As time passed it got closer and closer to yachting. When it was time to go we sorted out who was going with who, and then we went to Pandora Pond.
My group and I started to put the yacht togther. It was as heavy as a huge fridge. Then we darted out onto the water, like a fly trying to find fresh air. It was nice and calm sailing around Pandora Pond. We had to move the tiller to move and turn. To go a little faster we had to pull a rope called the Main Sheet, so it can catch some wind. But eventually we had to pack the yacht away. It took a while. Then we had to go back to school.

Year 6 yachting

Yay - it's finally year 6 yachting time!!
We're going next week,on Monday the 28th of March.
The 6's feel excited, nervous, a bit scared, but mostly excited.
We are having lessons for rigging and de-rigging the yacht, and we are getting better every day. There are 2 types of knots. One is the figure of 8 knot and the other is the bowline knot. Our favourite knot is the figure of 8 knot because it is easier than the bowline knot. The yachts we're going in are called the Optimist Yachts.
Some people have already packed the gear we need.
All of us hope that we have a safe trip to Pandora Pond and that the weather isn't too bad for sailing.

Year 5 camp

In week 5 the year 5s went on camp at Camp Wareham, which is at Aropauanui, just north of Napier. We swam and had lunch at the beach, and we went to the river. We did a river study to see how fast the water went and also how cold it was and how healthy the water was. Swimming at the waterhole was a real highlight. We saw some big farm machinery when we went eeling. Sleeping was done in cabins and tents.Playing spotlight was fun too.

Welcome back!

This year we have 28 students in Room 13.
We recently welcomed McKenzie, who has come to us from Christchurch. He and his family have told us what it was like in the earthquake, and they showed us some photos of where they lived and the houses around them.
We hope McKenzie enjoys his new life in Napier.
